Start a 2-day wildlife safari and explore the low-lying plains, savannah, woodlands, wetlands, and some of the many lakes that comprise Akagera National Park. Start with a short game drive and a sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema. Then, stay at a safari lodge in the park.
Meet your driver guide at your hotel at 8:00am and transfer you to Akagera National Park.
Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s most remarkable success stories—home to lions, rhinos, the Big Five, and many more. There are over 13 000 large animals, including a rapidly growing number of apex predators. However, what makes Akagera special is the conservation efforts from African Parks. Just over 20 years ago, it was on the verge of being lost forever! However, visionary leadership from African Parks has built a story of prosperity and hope where wildlife is now flourishing.
While this park is one of Africa’s smaller game parks, its diversity of habitats is unique. There are lakes, marshes, savannahs, mountains, and woodlands, all of which make for truly spectacular scenery.
Enjoy a sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema and see herds of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and several water bird species.
We set off early to find wildlife and explore the low-lying plains, savannahs, woodlands, wetlands, and some of the many lakes that comprise this special place.
With common sightings of zebra, giraffe, buffalo, topi, and many impalas, you will also be looking for elephants, rhinos, defassa waterbuck, roan antelope, eland, duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, and bushbuck.
On the plains, you will probably find spotted hyaenas and may even see lions. Leopards are usually seen in the scrub and woodlands, while, if you are lucky, you may also spot serval cats (wild cats), side-striped jackals, and several species of mongoose.
Make sure to take a packed lunch and stop at one of the designated picnic sites around the park. Toilets are available in a few locations. Unfortunately, drinking water is unavailable outside the lodges, so ensure you bring sufficient for your drive.
You will return to Kigali in the evening, and the drop-off at the airport marks the end of 2 Day Akagera.
