Itinerary Summary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

🟢 Distance: 10.75 km / 7 mi | ⏳ Time: 5-6 hrs | 🌿 Zone: Rainforest

  • Elevation: 1,811m → 3,021m (Altitude Gain: 1,210m)
  • After breakfast in Arusha or Moshi, depart for Machame Gate and complete registration.
  • Begin the scenic hike through the dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and exotic bird species.
  • The trail can be muddy and slippery, so hiking poles and gaiters are recommended.
  • Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

🟢 Distance: 5.3 km / 3 mi | ⏳ Time: 4-5 hrs | 🌾 Zone: Moorland

  • Elevation: 3,021m → 3,839m (Altitude Gain: 818m)
  • Trek out of the rainforest and ascend the steep ridges toward Shira Plateau.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru and the distant Kilimanjaro glaciers.
  • Overnight at Shira Camp, where temperatures start to drop.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 3,839m → 3,986m (Altitude Gain: 147m)
  • Crucial acclimatization day: Climb to Lava Tower (4,650m), then descend to Barranco Camp.
  • Pass the “Shark’s Tooth” rock formation and enjoy stunning views of Kibo Peak.
  • Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp, surrounded by glaciated cliffs.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,986m → 4,034m → 4,662m (Altitude Gain: 676m)
  • Challenge: Conquer the steep Barranco Wall, using hands for balance in some sections.
  • Descend into Karanga Valley before reaching Karanga Camp.
  • Enjoy spectacular views of the glaciers and prepare for the final ascent.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Reach Barafu Camp, the final stop before summit night.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,662m → 5,895m (Altitude Gain: 1,233m)

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

  • Elevation: 3,106m → 1,633m (Altitude Loss: 1,473m)
  • After breakfast and a farewell ceremony, descend to Mweka Gate.
  • Receive your summit certificate, then transfer back to Arusha/Moshi for a celebratory meal.
